Algerian East-West Highway Project - Eastern Section
Tunnel, Piers and Cross Structures
The East-West Motorway in Algeria is a 1,200-kilometer six-lane expressway, which will link the cities of Annaba in the East and the city of Tlemcen in the West. The joint-venture consortium COJAAL, consisting of the Japanese general contractors Kajima Co., Taisei Co., Nishimatsu Construction Co., Hazama Co. and the logistics supplier Itochu Co., is in charge of constructing a 400 km long section in the Eastern part.
The project is part of the government's $60 billion national economic development program started in 2005. This project is said to have a dramatic impact on Algeria's economy, where 85% of commercial exchanges are conducted by road. A total of 19 of Algeria's regions will be connected by this motorway. That is why experts believe that the new motorway will be a big asset to the Algerian economy.
An asset for the road’s construction was COJAAL’s cooperation with PERI Japan K.K., which provided system formwork and technical support for the main structures such as tunnel, piers and cross structures (crossing bridges and crossing tunnels). Thus PERI’s VARIO Wall Formwork and the ST100 Stacking Tower made a contribution to the jobsite and the benefits and advantages of these products were seen as follows:
■ By re-using the material the work period was shorten.
■ The simplicity of assembly and disassembly made it convenient to use, and also labor cost could be reduced.
■ The rigidity and stability of PERI’s material ensured high quality at the jobsite.
Thanks to its global experience PERI could always ensure a timely and solid supply of its formwork and shoring systems to Algeria.
